Life Begins at Conception

This is a picture of my son Noah, taken at 28 weeks gestation. In a 3D ultrasound, we observed him wiggling, brushing his face with his hand, and smiling. Noah is now almost 4 years old.

In a recent interview, Senator Barack Obama was asked, "at what point does a baby get human rights, in your view?"

Senator Obama responded, "answering that question with specificity, uh, you know, is, is, uh, above my paygrade."

Above his paygrade? Who taught him biology? My college biology textbook begins the discussion of human life with haploid cells and conception, not somewhere between 19 or 20 weeks of gestation or at birth. Even my six year old knows when life begins (although the discussion of how is yet to come). My children knew what was in my tummy when I was carrying Isaiah. A fetus? Yes, technically speaking. But that fetus came out of me wailing, kicking, and screaming. Up to the point that I laid down to have him delivered, it would have been legal for me to end his life. When would he not have been a human being? We can split hairs, but the fact is that his heart began beating before I even knew I was pregnant with him. The fact is, life begins at conception. Life begins at conception!

It's true that pregnancy takes a toll on a mother's body. It's true that there are unplanned pregnancies every day all over the world. Life does not become less beautiful or any less alive when it is unplanned, no matter the circumstance. Pro-abortion people will argue that women should not have to carry an unwanted pregnancy to term. Some point out that a baby cannot survive outside the womb before 22 weeks, 20 weeks, 19 weeks, etc., therefore it is not entitled to the protection of its mother's body. What!?

No child can survive outside the womb without their mother's protection, yet we expect parents to care for them anyway. When I take a baby home from the hospital, I feed him, keep him warm, diaper him, and bathe him. It is a huge responsibility and very time consuming. If I were to shirk these duties, I would be brought up on charges of child abuse and neglect. How different is the duty of a pregnant mother? There is much less required of her before birth; the baby within her womb requires her to eat and avoid toxic substances--oh--and give birth, which is much less dangerous than having an abortion. Women regularly survive childbirth. In fact, most of us survive it well enough to do it again and again.

When I pray quietly and peacefully at the abortion clinic, most mothers enter the driveway covering their faces and lay back in their seats to avoid being seen. There must be shame in abortion. They must know that something is wrong with what they're about to do. I pray so hard that their hearts will be changed and that they will come out to seek help for what seems to them to be a hopeless situation.

Abortion ends an innocent life. I could go on for pages and pages but I know the people that read this blog. I think that I would be preaching to the choir, no?

By the way, I'm against the death penalty too, but that's another discussion.
